Fig · field failure

A drain field is the most expensive part of a septic system to replace, so catching trouble early is worth real money. The warning signs are usually visible above ground before anything backs up indoors.

Early signs

  • Soggy or spongy ground over the drain field, even in dry weather.
  • Unusually green, fast-growing grass in stripes over the trenches.
  • Slow drains or gurgling throughout the house, not just one fixture.
  • Sewage odor outside near the field, or backups indoors.

Why fields fail

The most common cause is a tank that wasn't pumped, so solids carried over and clogged the soil pores. Once the soil is clogged ("biomat" overload), no amount of pumping brings it back. Other causes are hydraulic overload, roots, and compaction from driving over the field.

What to do

Stop adding load — spread out laundry, fix leaks, and pump the tank immediately to rule out a simple overflow. Then get an inspection. If the field is truly clogged, you're looking at a replacement; size and budget it with the calculators before you call installers.

Prevention

Pump on schedule and keep vehicles, sheds, and deep-rooted trees off the field. Those two habits prevent most premature failures.
