Septic maintenance
Septic Pump-Out Frequency Calculator
Find how often to pump your tank and what maintenance really costs per year — from tank size, household size, and whether you have a garbage disposal.
Estimate only. Have your tank inspected; sludge depth, not a calendar, is the real trigger for pumping.

What changes your pump-out interval
Two things drive it: tank size and how many people use the system. A bigger tank holds more sludge before it needs service; more people fill it faster. The calculator interpolates the published Penn State / Ohio State Extension figures and shortens the interval if you have a garbage disposal. Treat the years as a guide — the real trigger is sludge depth at an inspection: pump when scum and sludge fill about a third of the tank.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a septic tank be pumped?
Most households pump every 3 to 5 years, but it depends on tank size and how many people use it. A 1,000-gallon tank with four people needs pumping about every 2.6 years; the same tank with two people can go nearly 6 years.
How often should a 1,000-gallon septic tank be pumped?
Roughly every 5.9 years for two people, 2.6 years for four, and about 1.5 years for six. A garbage disposal shortens those intervals by about 25%.
Does a bigger tank need pumping less often?
Yes. A larger tank holds more sludge before it needs removal, so a 1,500-gallon tank serving four people goes about 4.2 years versus 2.6 years for a 1,000-gallon tank with the same household.
What happens if I do not pump my septic tank?
Sludge eventually overflows into the drain field, clogging it. A clogged drain field is the most expensive septic failure to fix — often thousands of dollars — so regular pumping is cheap insurance.
How much does septic pumping cost?
A routine pump-out typically costs $300–$600 depending on tank size and region, plus an inspection. Spread over the years between pumpings, the amortized annual cost is usually modest — the calculator shows it.
