What you're paying for
A mound is one of the priciest residential systems because it does what the soil can't. When natural soil is too shallow, too slow, or too wet, the drain field is built up in a raised bed of engineered sand above grade, and effluent is pumped up to it in measured doses. That means a pump and dosing chamber, electrical work, a lot of imported sand, and significant earthmoving — all on top of the tank and the field itself.
